Out of 349 housinf authorities in Texas that received money from the Americann Recovery andReinvestment Act, San Antonio Housinvg Authority, or SAHA, received the largest amount. SAHA is required to use the moneyg for capital improvements and all the funds must be spenr withinthree years. “Thesde funds will allow us to make much-neede repairs to our public housinf properties and improve the safety and qualitu of life for our SAHA President and CEO Lourdes CastroRamirez says.
Amonbg the properties slated for major upgrades is the LewisChathamj Apartments, a 119-unit apartment complex for seniors on the city’s Southj Side. Lewis Chatham also will undergop anextensive modernization. In addition, stimulus funds will be used to upgrade the security, elevators and fire safety at nearly 20 elderlyt communities. Other projects will involve replacing fencing, windows, roofing, cabinets, and ventilation and air conditioning systems.
