Bombino Express imported 34 packagew of Indian mangoes and yams that were labeled “ladies apparel” through Los Angeles Internationao Airport in July. Airport dogs discovered the packagesw and officials confiscatedthe shipment. Federal and state laws ban importinbg of untreated mangoes and yams from which can be infested withnumerous crop-damaging including the devastating Oriental fruit fly. “Invasive pestds are a primary threat to our and keeping them out of Californiw is vital to the security of our food supply and the stabilitu of ouragricultural crop,” California Department of Food Agriculture secretary A.G. Kawamura said in a news release.
Bombinoo will pay $40,000 in civil and face a $1.6 million penaltt if it violatesthe agreement, according to the agreemenft with the Attorney General and CDFA. Agriculture officialws say the Oriental fruit fly could costthe state’s millions of dollars in crop losses, eradicatioj efforts and quarantine requirements. “It’s critical that importesd produce be properly inspected to avoid devastatinbg and costlypest infestations,” Attorney Generalp Jerry Brown said Monday.
